Animal Kingdom Features and Updates:

  • Pandora: The Land of Avatar is set to open sometime in 2017 in what used to be known as Camp Minnie Mickey.
  • Keep in mind that animals naturally retreat at sundown, so try to arrive to the theme park early so you can get to see them during daylight.
  • The live theater ‘Festival of the Lion King’ attraction is the most popular of all, thanks to its amazing dance performances and puppeteering acts.

Animal Kingdom Little Known Facts:

  • There were plans for a Beastly Kingdom section of the theme park, but Disney chose not to build it due to budget limits.
  • Disney goes out of its way to ensure that every creature in the theme park is cared for properly by top specialists for each breed.
  • The park also doubles as a conservation and educational facility, being accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, as well as the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

There are zoos and then there is Animal Kingdom, Disney’s fourth theme park in Orlando and the future home of the upcoming Avatar-themed area.

Knowing the strong appeal of a zoo for people of all ages, Disney created a hybrid between the traditional live-animal zoo and the storytelling attractions from its Orlando theme parks.

Since it opened its gates to the world in 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been overshadowed by its older siblings, but this theme park is still growing and promises many more adventures to come. With this in mind, it was announced in September 2011 that Disney was working with director James Cameron to bring to life the sights, sounds and characters from blockbuster movie “Avatar.”

Surrounding its centerpiece Tree of Life, the Animal Kingdom theme park features an amazing wildlife preserve where animals from every corner of the planet live, eat and rest thanks to the caring efforts of the park’s staff. In fact, you can find more diversity in animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom than in most zoos around the country.

Animal Kingdom features several themed lands, which include:

  • Discovery Island
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Dinoland USA
  • Oasis
  • Rafiki’s Planet Watch
  • Pandora: The Land of Avatar (Opening in 2017)

Among the most popular animals on display at Animal Kingdom are lions, Bengal tigers, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, and crocodiles. That said, the park is also home to rare species such as Galapagos tortoises, collared brown and ring-tailed lemurs, and the ever-entertaining pink flamingos.

Other attractions worth checking out around Disney’s Animal Kingdom include the animated show It’s a Bug’s Life, the fast-speed roller coaster on Expedition Everest, and the exhilarating experience of traveling through the African landscape in the Kilimanjaro Safaris.
